A rare and fine Mandoline Patent Indicator – ‘Changing The Tunes At Will’ musical box playing eight airs, by Grosclaude
(Weill & Harburg), Ser.-N° 20173 / 243

Gamme N°. unknown, playing romantic, dance, formal and sacred airs, single-spring motor, W & H stamped single-section comb with the mandoline teeth in groups of up to five, instant change lever with tune title display on rotating drum behind panel, actuated by labelled lever behind labelled play lever, ebonised interior under dustlid, rare W & H tunesheet, in grained case with the slight domed rosewood veneered lid with geometric ebony and boxwood cartouche, framed by double stringing

Measures: Case 24 inches (61 cm) wide, cylinder 14 1/4 inches (36 cm)

Footnote: Formally restored by, and in the collection of, the Late H. A. V. Bulleid. See The Music Box, Vol. 18, No. III, page 79 for the article he wrote about it.
Not often seen this format, with a clever and visually assistive user-friendly feature of being able to select, at will, the tune one wishes to hear with the title of said-air displayed in type, in clear view behind the cylinder. Note the lack of dividing baffles between motor barrel and left side and control levers to right-hand side to fully incorporate this feature. In addition, the rosewood veneer to the lid is an end-of sheet job to left and right with cleated infills to make up the shortfalls. An interesting format which is very welcome to see.
